Winter Berries were made with one of the back yard trees in mind after a winter freeze a couple years ago - it's one of the trees that plays host to Cedar Waxwings and Cardinals all winter long, 'stealing' berries the tree provides for them.
The trio of handmade buttons measures 1 3/8 inches in length, 1 inch wide and 1/8 inch thick. I used a small twig from the aforementioned tree to add the texture to a slab of white earthenware clay - the results are what you see here. They've been glazed with my standard clear glaze over the 'winter berries' that were roughed in with colored stains.
The perfect size for a hand knitted or crocheted scarf or neck warmer, they would also be perfect as an accent on a felted bag or purse.
I enjoy making buttons. I started doing them several years ago for a friend who creates wonderful felted handbags and totes as well as incredible quilted bags. She wanted something different than what she could find in the stores.
Although the buttons are washable, it’s best if you either hand wash the garment or turn it inside out and hang or block it to dry.
